AUTHOR’S CHOICE SUGAR BUSTERS!® Products?

4. Who approved the Author's Choice Sugar Busters! Cookies formula?

The Sugar Busters! Cookies conforms to the dietary recommendations made by the authors of the books Sugar Busters!, Sugar Busters! Quick and Easy Cookbook, and Sugar Busters! for Kids. The physicians who wrote these books and who have endorsed and approved our cookie are experts in the fields of endocrinology, thoracic, cardiac, and vascular medicine, as well as gastroenterology and hepatology. We are very happy to have an ongoing, working relationship with these professionals, as they understand how the foods we eat affect the body and have helped us to create a healthy alternative to the junk foods that many people eat.

5. Why did you create the Sugar Busters! Cookies?

The Sugar Busters! Cookies were developed to help people break their sugar habit, to help people lose weight, and to provide a good source of fiber. As such, the Sugar Busters! Cookies can help people who wish to reduce their intake of refined sugars and carbohydrates as well as overall calories (they are sugar-free and have no refined white flour). Even though our cookies taste sweet they are sugar-free. Plus, they are packed with fiber (helps a person feel full) and aren’t extremely low in calories (real substance).  Thus, no one feels ‘cheated’ when eating them and they truly do help people lose weight! They are also a wonderful snack alternative to sugary treats for both children and adults. Sugar Busters! Cookies can also be used as a meal replacement for those wishing to lose weight!

6. What are the ingredients of Sugar Busters! Cookies?

Our Author's Choice Sugar Busters! Cookies have several ingredients - all of which are listed prominently on the package they are delivered in. Some of the more noteworthy aspects of our cookies are that they contain Oat Dietary Fiber and are very sweet tasting, although they contain NO sugar and NO refined white flour. They are sweetened with Splenda, which makes them OK for diabetics to use.

All ingredients in these cookies have been thoroughly tested and are approved by the Sugar Busters! doctors as well as our own Medical Research Board.

The Sugar Busters! cookie is a Diabetic Friendly, Sugar-Free, Great Tasting cookie that is also an Excellent Source of Fiber. Further, when used in conjunction with a diet that is low in saturated fat and cholesterol, it may help reduce your risk of heart disease.

This heart-healthy cookie does NOT contain hydrogenated oils (zero trans-fatty acids). For a complete list of nutritional facts and ingredients concerning the Sugar Busters Cookies, visit the Products Section.

7. I’ve read some articles on the Internet that are very negative about certain sweetening agents. Out of all the sweetening agents available, why did you choose sucralose or Splenda®?

It’s important to know that the Internet has the ability to spread information, misinformation, disinformation and non-information at incredible speeds. Scientists and health professionals do not use the Internet as a regular basis for determining the safety of any substance. Instead, more reliable sources such as complete studies or peer-reviewed abstracts are sought. So, while the Internet can be a valuable tool, the consumer should certainly be aware that online searches and online materials might not provide enough information to accurately assess any particular subject.

During the course of developing the Sugar Busters! Cookie, we found that there were indeed many different sweetening agents available. One of the primary reasons that we chose Splenda® (or sucralose) was because it is a very sweet substance that takes only very small amounts to sweeten a cookie like ours.

Obviously, the safety of sweetening agents is of the utmost concern to those of us who are health conscious. In the case of Splenda®, it has been tested in over 100 studies during the last 20 years. What these studies have confirmed is that it is completely safe. One of the latest studies (published in Food and Chemical Toxicology, July 2000) examined the safety of repeated doses of sucralose over a long period. Most toxicity and safety studies examine a single dose or repeated doses over a short time span.  This study was important because it studied the tolerance of frequent exposure to sucralose over several weeks. Healthy human adult volunteers received either sucralose or fructose twice a day. The amount of sucralose fed ranged from 125 mg/day for the first few weeks up to 500 mg/day for the final weeks. One teaspoon of sucralose is 500 mg, which is a much larger amount than is used to sweeten our cookies.

The results of this study showed that there were no adverse experiences or clinically detectable effects attributable to sucralose. Hematology, serum biochemistry, urinalysis, and EKG tracings were not affected by sucralose consumption. Blood samples were taken and showed no build-up or accumulation of sucralose. This study was reported by the Iowa State University Extension ‘News and Reports.’.

It is also worthy to note that for all food additives, including non-nutritive sweeteners such as sucralose, the FDA determines an acceptable daily intake (ADI). ADI is defined as the amount of a food additive that can be safely consumed on a daily basis over a person’s lifetime without any adverse effects and includes a 100-fold safety factor. Actual intake by individuals with blood sugar disorders, such as diabetes, for all non-nutritive sweeteners is well below the ADI.

As a final note, while they do not actively campaign for the use of one sweetener over another, the following organizations do support the use and safety of Splenda: the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Joint Evaluation Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), the Expert Committee on Food Additives, and 30 other national and international Health Ministries. Furthermore, it is also supported for use by the non-profit consumer watchdog organization the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), which has complained continuously about safety issues surrounding other sweeteners. For more information on Splenda or sucralose visit http://www.splenda.com.

We’re actually very fortunate to have this sweetener available for use.

8. I know that I can use the Sugar Busters! cookies to help with losing weight. My question is: How many cookies should I use as a meal supplement?

The number of cookies that will be eaten as a meal supplement really depends on the person. Most people find that one cookie and a glass or two of liquids satisfies their hunger. Heavy eaters may wish to eat two cookies in one sitting.

Many people use the cookie in place of their normal snacks (which are often packed with sugar). Doing so allows them to reduce the total amount of calories that they consume daily without feeling as though they’ve sacrificed sweet treats. By reducing the number of calories from excessive snacking they are able to achieve their weight loss goals in a more timely fashion.

It’s important to note that the cookie isn't simply for weight loss. Diabetics can learn to integrate it into their normally nutritious meal plans and those who find that they are eating too much sugar can use it as a healthy alternative (this includes children). Finally, those who need to increase their fiber intake will find the Sugar Busters cookies to be a great tasting way to do this as well.

9. Is Polydextrose the same as Dextrose?

No. Polydextrose is a unique bulking agent that helps our cookie maintain its palatability and textural quality by absorbing water and providing tenderness without sweetness. Dextrose, on the other hand, is a simple sugar that is derived entirely from corn. It is also known as glucose.

10. The Sugar Busters! Cookies have several grams of carbohydrates and I thought carbohydrates were bad for you. Also, how can they be ‘Diabetic Friendly’ with so many carbs?

These are great questions. Obviously, the Sugar Busters! cookies ARE either diabetic friendly or they are not. It can't be both. THEY ARE!

The reason for the confusion as to what is and what isn’t diabetic friendly is probably due in large part of the misunderstanding as to how specific carbohydrate sources affect the body.

The Sugar Busters! Cookies contain only 1 NET CARB per cookie. This figure is derived by subtracting all the carbohydrates that have minimal impact on blood sugar. For those counting carbohydrates, count only 1 Carb per cookie. For a more detailed discussion on carbohyrates and their impact on the body, see below.

Typically those who suffer from blood sugar/insulin disorders are taught an easy to understand carbohydrate counting system.

Carbohydrate counting is a system that teaches the individual to calculate the entire amount of carbs that each meal contains. There is no distinction made between the carbohydrates found in soft drinks, candy bars, fruits, vegetables or grains. All carbohydrates are considered equal. Therefore 35 grams of carbohydrates gained from eating maple syrup is considered the same as 35 grams of carbohydrates gained from eating beans.

Since the carbohydrate counting system is simple it has been helpful for those people who don’t have the time or the inclination to find out exactly how specific carbs might influence blood sugar spikes. However, those who have studied the glycemic index of specific carbohydrates recognize that carbohydrates are not all created equal.

The confusion becomes even greater when people are told that gram for gram both simple and complex carbohydrates boost blood sugar levels approximately the same amount since both are converted into glucose by the body. Again, general statements such as this fail to clarify that there is a definite difference between the way specific carbohydrates (whether classified as simple or complex) cause blood sugar levels to fluctuate.

Foods that are higher on the glycemic index cause the blood sugar of a person to spike dramatically and quickly. On the other hand, those foods that rank lower on the glycemic index don’t have such a negative impact on blood sugar fluctuations. Both reactions are due to the way your body processes (breaks down or digests) the carbohydrates that you eat.

It is also important to note that your body operates largely on the fuel gained from carbohydrates. Your brain, for instance, gets nearly 100% of the fuel it needs to function properly from the glucose that is produced from digested carbohydrates. Without adequate carbohydrates you will most certainly notice a drop in both physical and mental energy. As Dr. Morris Bethea has stated, "Our bodies are made to run off sugar. We can’t live without it. So you want a diet with satisfactory carbohydrates – but you want those that modulate insulin secretion downward."

Choosing foods, like the Sugar Busters cookies, that don’t breakdown into glucose as quickly as high glycemic foods helps to control the amount of insulin that is needed to regulate blood sugar levels. Regulation of blood sugar levels and the subsequent storage of excess glucose that is produce by your body when high glycemic foods are eaten can also help you reduce the amount of fat on your body.

Diabetics can certainly integrate the Sugar Busters cookies into their normally nutritious meals.

For more information as to how carbohydrates influence blood sugar fluctuations please read the Sugar Busters! book written by Dr. Sam Andrews, Dr. Luis Balart, Dr. Morris Bethea, and Mr. Leighton Steward. This book is available from Freedom Quest USA for only $14.95.

11. The cookies have several grams of fat. I thought you should avoid fat if you want to lose weight.

For the last 30 years our country has been in the midst of a low-fat revolution. We’ve reduced the amount of fat in our diets dramatically and yet we’re 30% fatter than we have ever been. Obviously, fat in and of itself, isn’t the culprit.

The fact is that you must have fat in your diet so that your body can burn fat. What you want to avoid is hydrogenated oils (fats) that have trans-fatty acids. Sugar Busters! doctors (all of whom are practicing medical specialists) believe that refined, high glycemic sugar is the true culprit in our fight against obesity. The fat found in Sugar Busters! cookies helps you feel full, satisfies cravings, and it provides good texture and flavor. Due to the amount of fiber in each cookie they are very heart healthy and are endorsed by a cardiovascular specialist.

12. What drink should be consumed with the Sugar Busters cookies (i.e., whole milk, skim milk, water, tea, coffee, diet drink, etc.)?

Almost any liquid is fine. In general a person should drink 8 - 16 ounces of liquid per cookie. If you drink milk we suggest that you choose 1% or lower.

13. I’m interested in maximizing my weight loss so how should I integrate the Sugar Busters! cookies into my diet plan?

The simplest thing to do is to follow the plan set forth in our 2-Day Cookie Diet.  This plan is, honestly, the easiest to follow diet in America because it allows you to eat real food, it integrates a 'cheat day' (which all of us need) and it takes into consideration the fact that dieting, long-term, requires that you eat sensibly.  So, with the 2-Day Cookie Diet you're asked to diet for a maximum of 48 hours (anyone can do that) and then you're allowed to CHEAT (eat ANYTHING you want) on the third day.  Plus, if you follow the 2-Day Cookie Diet plan, you'll NEVER go to bed hungry!

Although I understand what you want emphasized, you’ve actually asked two different questions by using the terms ‘weight loss’ and ‘diet’ in the same question. I’ll try to answer both without confusing you.

First, the term ‘diet’ doesn’t necessarily mean ‘weight loss’ even though the two terms are commonly used as if they were synonymous. A diet is simply ‘what you eat.’ Therefore a diet could consist of only water or only pizza, or a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, and meats etc. Using this definition one would simply eat a Sugar Busters! cookie in order to integrate them into a diet plan. For instance, we have many people who have no need to lose weight but do recognize a need to increase their daily intake of fiber. They have found that adding a cookie or two to their meals gives them extra fiber (up to 16% of the RDI of fiber when 2 cookies are eaten) as well as a tasty treat.

As far as 'weight loss' is concerned the first thing that you need to determine is what type of diet you’re comfortable with. If you are unsure of what type of diet might be correct for you we suggest that you investigate the Sugar Busters! diet plan. You can purchase the #1 New York Times Best Selling book Sugar Busters! From Freedom Quest USA for only $14.95. The Sugar Busters! plan is a ground-breaking new diet plan that is based on sound nutritional principles and, simply stated, is a smarter way of eating.

If you are using the cookies to help you lose weight, here are some general suggestions. We suggest that people follow the 2-Day Cookie Diet plan.

You should also consider a moderate exercise plan, a good attitude, and dietary supplements to include at least multi-vitamins and minerals (such as Power Formula).

As always we suggest that you consult your doctor or other knowledgeable health practitioner before beginning any diet or exercise program.

The Sugar Busters! cookies can also be used in place of sugary snacks for both children and adults. This may also help to control weight gain as it isn’t uncommon for 3 out of 5 calories eaten to come from foods high in refined sugar (candy, soft drinks, cakes, cookies, etc.).

As a final note, many people have found that they have maximized their weight loss by using a combination of either our Hoodia or Metabolizer 5000 (often both) along with our Sugar Busters! cookies. For more information on these products please visit the appropriate product section.

14. The Sugar Busters! cookies are higher in calories than I expected. Is there a reason for this?

While our Sugar Busters! cookies are higher in calories than a normal cookie they also have ZERO SUGAR and they are an excellent source of fiber which makes them a great snack alternative to say a bowl of ice cream or a regular cookies and/or potato chips. We also feel (and have been told by our customers) that the calorie count is just right for people who are looking for a way to lose weight without feeling starved.

As you probably know, very low calorie diets (VLCD) don’t work long term. The reason VLCDs fail is because the people who try them are depriving their body needed calories. You won’t feel deprived when you eat our cookies. Even if a person eats 4 Sugar Busters cookies every day, they can still eat nutritious meals and healthy snacks and be able to reduce their overall caloric intake so that they lose unwanted fat. So, if you’re looking for a smarter way to ‘spend’ 150 calories our Sugar Busters! cookies certainly fit the bill.

15. Are the Sugar Busters! cookies Kosher certified?

Yes. Each packet of cookies bears the K Parve symbol.

This symbol can be found at the bottom of the ingredients label just to right of the word Mobile, Alabama. This symbol also appears on the individual cookie packet wrappers next to the Nutrition Facts.

This certification is often very important to many different groups and faiths.

For those of you who may be wondering, kosher means ‘proper’ and refers specifically to foods that are acceptable to be eaten by those of the Jewish faith or those who practice and observe certain dietary laws as prescribed in the Torah, the Old Testament. Such foods and food product derivatives are said to fall under the laws of Kashrut. These laws come primarily from the Bible, with additional Rabbinical decrees which have been handed down through generations of time. All foods that are certified Kosher must be manufactured under reliable supervision.

24. I recently read that the ingestion of as little as 3 cc of Stearal Konium Chloride could be toxic and then I noticed that Bellatude contains the same ingredient. This concerns me.

First, Bellatude isn't ingested (swallowed), it's rubbed onto your skin and enters the body through the skin (transdermal absorption). Oral ingestion of a wide variety of substances can be toxic while topical application can be beneficial. Examples of this are tea tree oil and household rubbing alcohol.  Both of these are non-toxic when applied topically - on the skin - but toxic if swallowed.

Secondly, there are at least two different types of stearal konium chloride - plant-based and non-plant based. Stearal Konium Chloride that is derived from plants is non-toxic. Bellatude contains plant-based (derived) stearal konium chloride. Further, no animal-based material is used in the manufacturing of Bellatude.
